CLZ Board

A voluntary board that are elected by the membership governs Conservation Lower Zambezi. The Chief Executive Officer and Base Camp Manager report to this board on a monthly basis. Our team is a diverse and dedicated bunch of conservationists, educators committed to the cause of the Lower Zambezi’s survival.

Riccardo Garbaccio (Chairman)

Zambian born and of Italian descent, Riccardo has been heavily involved with conservation and community work since CLZ’s inception. He built Kanyemba Lodge in 1999 and has lived in the Lower Zambezi ever since. He is directly involved in all of CLZ’s work, especially maintaining relationships between the private sector and the community in the region.
Timothy Mushibwe (Vice-chairman)
Previously Managing Partner of Deloitte & Touche Zambia, currently Timothy is Senior Partner of accountancy firm Baker Tilly Merali’s. He holds a BSC in Mining Engineering from Leeds University as well as Fellowships with the Association of the Chartered Certified Accounts (FCCA) and the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (FZICA). Timothy serves on several boards including the Lusaka Stock Exchange and as Chairman of the Zambia Tourist Board.

Timothy has lived in Zambia most of his active professional life during which time he has developed a deep commitment to conservation, the preservation of Zambian national heritage and the drive for improving livelihoods of communities: the poor and vulnerable people in Zambia’s rural areas. Timothy’s involvement with conservation activities and work, and in particular with CLZ, spans over 17 years.

Alan Harkness (Treasurer)
Alan has worked exclusively in the hospitality industry and is a proven management professional with extensive, valuable experience in Africa, Eastern Europe and the UK, with over 35 years experience. He has served on the board of CLZ for the past 7 years. He is dedicated to wildlife protection and conservation, as he sees that it can provide a sustainable economic future for Zambia and contribute substantially to the betterment of the lives of the nations people.

Management Team - CLZ Base Camp personnel include:

Ian Stevenson (Chief Executive Officer)
Ian ran CLZ from 2000 until 2005 when he broaden his conservation horizons to work for African Parks both in Ethiopia and in Bangweulu, Northern Zambia. In October 2011 Ian decided to come back to CLZ as Chief Executive Officer where his knowledge and experience in running a conservation organisation in the Lower Zambezi are invaluable. Ian is also a qualified Lower Zambezi Safari Guide and holds his Private Pilot’s license.

Sarah Davies (Base Camp Manager)
After working for CLZ in 2008, Sarah returned to the UK and qualified as a solicitor in the city of London. During this time she also developed her law and international development skills and worked pro bono for several high profile international NGOs. She returned to CLZ as Base Camp Manager in March 2011 and also co-ordinates the environmental education program and CLZ’s fundraising.
Oscar Mwiya (Assistant Base Camp Manager)
Oscar has been at CLZ for 5 years. He lives in Chirundu with his wife and daughter. In charge of the camp kitchen as well as day-to-day camp running duties, Oscar has also recently become involved in driving duties. He is meticulous in his attention to detail and a real asset to CLZ.

Besa Kaoma (Environmental Educator)
Originally from the Northern Province of Zambia, Besa trained as an environmental educator in South Africa as well as attending courses in the UK and Hong Kong. He also has an impressive background as a safari guide with experience in Kafue National Park, Zambia – as well as Lower Zambezi. He is passionate about education and a natural with children.
